Book Review: Upside-Down Magic by Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, and Emily Jenkins

I just finished Upside-Down Magic by Sarah Mlynowski, Lauren Myracle, and Emily Jenkins, and it’s such a fun little escape! This 2015 middle-grade fantasy kicks off with Nory, a kid whose magic goes haywire—she turns into a kitten with wings or a dandelion instead of a proper animal shifter. She ends up in the Upside-Down Magic class at Sage Academy with other kids whose powers are a bit wonky, like Bax who accidentally summons storms or Elliott who freezes stuff by mistake.

I was reading this with my cousin on a lazy Sunday afternoon, sprawled on the couch, and we couldn’t stop giggling. Nory’s so full of heart—she’s not perfect, but she owns her weird magic, and that’s refreshing. The story’s all about her and her new crew figuring out how to fit in, with a mean teacher, Ms. Starr, making things tough. The way they turn their “flaws” into strengths—like using Bax’s storms to cool off—had me rooting for them big time. It’s got this cozy, school-adventure feel, like a lighter Harry Potter vibe.

What I loved was how it celebrates being different. The characters are quirky and real, and the friendship between Nory, Bax, and the others feels warm, like my own crew back in school. That said, it’s aimed at younger kids, so the plot’s pretty simple—some parts dragged a bit, and I wished for more action. Still, the humor and heart make up for it.

This book got me thinking about how we all have our quirks that can shine if we let them. I jotted down a line about embracing the upside-down on a scrap paper, ‘cause it stuck with me. It’s a sweet, light read.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Recommendation: Grab this if you’re in the mood for a fun, magical story that’s great for kids or anyone who loves a feel-good tale. Perfect for a rainy day with some popcorn—just dive in and enjoy the charm!
