Book Review: Unbound by Michael R. Miller
I just finished Unbound by Michael R. Miller, and it’s a dragon-filled epic that swept me away this afternoon, 1:05 PM on Sunday, July 20, 2025. This 2021 book is the second in the Songs of Chaos series, picking up after Ascendant with Holt and Ash on a quest to unite the Elder Dragons, while Talia rules as a rider queen and Osric wrestles with his dark path. It’s a fantasy ride with heart and grit.
I was reading this on my balcony earlier, soaking in the Sunday sun with a chai, and the world-building pulled me right in. Holt and Ash, the blind dragon and his outcast rider, are out to save the day again, facing off against Sovereign’s growing power. Talia’s struggle to be taken seriously as queen added some political spice, and Osric’s twisted journey with his shadow dragon kept me guessing—he’s bad but maybe not all bad? The action’s intense, like their battles with the scourge, but it’s the bond between Holt and Ash that really shines, warm and fierce.
What I loved was how it deepens the story. The multiple viewpoints—Holt, Talia, Osric—give you a full picture, and the dragon magic feels fresh, with new twists that kept me hooked. That said, it’s not perfect; the pacing drags a bit with Talia’s political stuff, and some side characters faded into the background. Still, the emotional highs, like Osric’s raw moments, made up for it.
This got me thinking about loyalty and survival—I scribbled “strength in chaos” on a napkin today, ‘cause it stuck with me. It’s a solid sequel that builds on the first book’s vibe.
