Book Review: The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller

Man, I just finished The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller the other night, and it’s a tear-jerker that stuck with me long after I closed it—think back to a chill evening around 8:12 PM on Tuesday, March 15, 2022. This 2011 retelling of the Iliad from Patroclus’s side is a love story wrapped in epic battles, and it hit me right in the feels.

I was kicked back on my couch with a chai, letting the story pull me into ancient Greece. Patroclus, this awkward kid who’s no hero, meets Achilles, the golden boy with a destiny, and their friendship turns into something deeper over time. Those early days—training, laughing by the sea—had me grinning, but then the Trojan War rolls in, and the tension with Agamemnon and that prophecy? I was biting my nails, knowing it’d end rough. That last bit with Achilles’s choice? Man, I had to grab a tissue.

What got me was how alive it feels. Miller’s words flow like poetry, and the love between Patroclus and Achilles is so tender yet tragic—it’s the heart of the book. The gods messing with their lives added this mythic kick, but it’s their human moments that stick. Sure, it’s not flawless; the war dragged a little in the middle, and I craved more of their younger days. Still, the ending’s worth every page.

This had me mulling over love and loss—I jotted “some bonds never fade” on a napkin that night, ‘cause it lingered. It’s a stunning, emotional ride.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Recommendation: Yo, if you’re into epic love tales with a mythic edge, grab this—perfect for a quiet night when you’re up for a story that’ll wreck you in the best way. Awesome for history buffs or anyone ready to sob a little!
