Book Review: The College Panda SAT Math by Nielson Phu

I just worked my way through The College Panda SAT Math by Nielson Phu, and it’s a total game-changer if you’re prepping for the SAT. This book, updated for the current test (at least up to 2020, with a new edition coming in 2026), is all about nailing that math section, especially if you’re aiming for a top score. Phu’s a teacher who went from an average SAT score to the 99th percentile on his own, and this book feels like he’s passing that secret sauce straight to you.

I was tackling this on my desk one evening, calculator in hand, and it’s packed with stuff you won’t find in basic prep books. It covers everything—fractions, algebra, even tricky stuff like trigonometry and matrices—with clear examples that show you how to think through each problem. I tried a practice question on quadratic equations, and the step-by-step breakdown made it click in a way my school lessons never did. There’s over 500 practice problems, and the explanations? They’re like having Phu sit next to you, pointing out where I’d mess up, like forgetting to double-check signs.

What I loved is how thorough it is. It’s not just theory—it’s real test strategies, like spotting the traps the SAT loves to throw. I felt smarter after a few chapters, especially on those wordy data analysis questions. But it’s not a breeze; some parts, like the advanced geometry, took me a couple reads, and it’s definitely aimed at kids who already know their basics. If math’s your weak spot, you might need an easier start first. Also, since it’s pre-Digital SAT, some question styles might feel a bit off, but it still covers the core.

This book got me hyped to practice more—I even started timing myself on the exercises, feeling like I’m prepping for the real deal. It’s less about cramming and more about mastering, which I dig.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Recommendation: Pick this up if you’re serious about crushing the SAT math section and want a deep dive into the material. It’s ideal for a focused study session over a few weeks—just grab a notebook, your calculator, and some quiet time to really soak it in.
