The Book Thief

Markus Zusak

The year is 1939. Germany during Nazi rule. The nation is choking on air. There has never been a busier death and there ever will be.

Liesel’s life is altered by picking up a solitary thing that is partially concealed in the snow beside her brother’s grave. She had accidentally left The Gravedigger’s Handbook behind, and this is her first experience stealing a book. As Liesel learns to read with the aid of her foster father, who plays the accordian, a love affair with books and words starts. Before long, she’s pilfering volumes from Nazi book burnings, the mayor’s wife’s collection, and any other location that has books lying about.

However, these are perilous times. Liesel’s world is simultaneously opened up and locked down when she discovers that her foster family is hiding a Jew in their basement.

Award-winning novelist Markus Zusak has given us one of the most memorable stories of our time with exquisitely written, intensely felt prose.
