Book Review: Normal People by Sally Rooney

I just finished Normal People by Sally Rooney, and it’s a quiet storm that stuck with me long after I put it down—think back to a rainy night around 7:45 PM on Friday, October 12, 2018. This 2018 book follows Connell and Marianne, two Irish teens from different worlds who keep circling back to each other through high school and college, and it’s a rollercoaster of emotions.

I was curled up on my couch with a chai, watching the rain tap the window, and their story pulled me right in. Connell’s this popular guy with a soft side, and Marianne’s the outcast with a sharp mind—they hook up in secret at first, then drift and reconnect over years. The way they misunderstand each other, like when Connell’s too shy to ask her out proper, had me rooting for them to figure it out. The college scenes, with their awkward parties and deep talks, felt so real it hurt sometimes.

What got me was how honest it is. Rooney nails the push-pull of young love—jealousy, longing, those moments of connection that fade too fast. It’s not flashy, just raw human stuff, and that’s what makes it hit. That said, it’s not perfect; the pacing stumbles a bit, and some of their fights left me frustrated, wishing they’d just talk. Still, the ending left me pondering their choices.

This had me thinking about how love can be messy and quiet—I scribbled “sometimes normal is enough” on a napkin that night, ‘cause it lingered. It’s a deep, beautiful read.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
