Book Review: Like a Love Story by Abdi Nazemian

I just finished Like a Love Story by Abdi Nazemian, and it’s a book that stuck with me long after I turned the last page. Released in 2019, this YA novel takes you back to 1989 New York City, right in the thick of the AIDS crisis, and follows three teens—Reza, Art, and Judy—whose lives get tangled up in love, friendship, and activism. It’s heavy, but it’s beautiful in a way that hits you deep.

I was reading this on a quiet evening at home, with some tea to keep me company, and the emotions just poured out. Reza’s this Iranian kid who’s new to the city, scared to admit he’s gay because all he sees is AIDS taking lives around him. Then there’s Art, the bold, out-and-proud photographer who’s all about fighting back, and Judy, his best friend, a fashion-loving soul who’s all heart. Their story starts with Reza dating Judy to hide his feelings for Art, but it quickly turns into a messy, real exploration of who they are. I felt for Reza—his fear felt so raw—and Art’s passion for change, especially with Judy’s uncle Stephen battling AIDS, had me tearing up.

What got me was how real it all feels. The ‘80s vibe—Madonna references, protests, the weight of loss—paints this vivid picture. Stephen’s note cards about love and resistance? They’re like little punches to the gut that stay with you. The romance between Reza and Art builds slow, with tension that’s almost painful, but it’s the friendship between all three that really shines. That said, it’s not an easy read—some parts, like the AIDS scenes, are tough, and the love triangle dragged a bit for me. Still, the heart behind it kept me going.

This book made me think about courage and love in dark times. I scribbled down a line about love being a fight on a napkin, ‘cause it felt so true. It’s a story that lingers, mixing tears with hope.

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Recommendation: Pick this up if you’re up for a moving story about love and identity with a ‘80s twist. It’s great for a quiet night when you’re ready for something that’ll make you think and feel—perfect for anyone who loves a raw, heartfelt read.
