Book Review: Lessons in Faking by Selina Mae
I just wrapped up Lessons in Faking by Selina Mae, and it’s a total rom-com treat that kept me smiling. This 2024 New Adult novel, the first in the Hall Beck University series, follows Athalia Pressley, who’s desperate to reconnect with her twin brother Henry after their parents’ death. When a failing stats class lands her with Henry’s rival, Dylan McCarthy, as a tutor, she strikes a deal to fake date him to keep Henry’s attention—and things get messy fast.
I was reading this on a rainy afternoon, tucked into my favorite chair, and the chemistry between Athalia and Dylan had me hooked. Athalia’s this snarky, determined girl who’s not thrilled about Dylan’s cocky attitude or dreamy soccer-player looks, but their fake dates—think awkward dinners and forced laughs—turn into something real. The banter’s sharp, and I loved how Dylan’s softer side sneaks out, like when he makes sure Athalia eats. The plot’s all about their fake-dating plan backfiring, with Henry barely in the picture, which made it more about their growing bond than the brother drama.
What I enjoyed most was the enemies-to-lovers vibe—it’s classic but done with a fresh twist. The college setting feels alive, and Athalia’s vulnerability about losing her parents added some depth. That said, it’s not perfect; the fake-dating goal got fuzzy, and I wished for more of Dylan’s perspective to balance things out. Still, it’s a light, fun read with enough heart to keep you turning pages.
This book got me thinking about how pretending can lead to real feelings—kinda like my own crushes that started as jokes. I jotted down a line about fake smiles turning real on a sticky note, ‘cause it hit home. It’s a sweet, steamy escape.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Recommendation: Grab this if you’re into light, flirty college romances with a fake-dating kick—perfect for a chill evening when you want a story that’s fun and a little spicy. Great for rom-com fans looking for a quick, feel-good read!
