If Schools Didn’t Exist: A Study in the Sociology of Schools
A classic in educational philosophy that examines the core goals and duties of schools is now available in English for the first time. This seminal 1971 essay on the essential role and goal of education should be read alongside other influential publications from the same era, such as How Children Fail by John Holt, Pedagogy of the Oppressed by Paulo Freire, and Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich. Translated into English for the first time, Nils Christie’s If School Didn’t Exist diverges from previous works by focusing more on schools and their unique community and social surroundings than on schooling (and deschooling). Christie contends that rather than acting as assembly lines for the creation of future workers and citizens, schools should serve as testing grounds for social cohesion.
Christie provides three instances of schools in various contexts: a French village school that developed into the cornerstone of its neighborhood; Native American schools run by the federal government that encouraged feelings of inferiority; and a secondary school in Britain that perpetuated class division. According to him, the role of the school is to distribute information, differentiate students based on merit, and serve as a storage facility for members of society who are deemed unproductive. He presents a vision of a society centered on normalizing the needs and values of local communities. He also promotes the notion of the school-society, a self-governing entity comprising kids, teachers, parents, and community.
