Book Review: Hatching Twitter by Nick Bilton
I just tore through Hatching Twitter by Nick Bilton, and holy crap, it’s like a soap opera set in Silicon Valley. This book, dropped in 2013, spills all the tea on how Twitter went from a scrappy idea to a global giant. It follows the four guys who started it—Evan Williams, Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone, and Noah Glass—and let me tell you, it’s less “tech genius” and more “backstabbing drama.”
I was chilling on my couch one weekend, flipping through this, and it felt like I was watching a movie. Bilton lays out how these dudes, who were just nerdy hackers messing around, built Twitter almost by accident while working on a failing podcast company called Odeo. The way he tells it, you’re right there in the room as they argue over what Twitter even is. Like, Jack saw it as a way to flex his ego with status updates, while Ev thought it was about sharing news and connecting people. I remember pausing to check my own Twitter—sorry, X—feed, thinking, “Man, this app came from that chaos?”
The best part is the juicy drama. Friendships fall apart, egos clash, and people get kicked out left and right. I won’t spoil who screws over who, but let’s just say it’s a masterclass in how not to run a startup. I was legit shocked at some of the power plays—like, these guys were supposed to be buddies! Bilton’s got all these emails and interviews to back it up, so it feels real, not like he’s making it up. But sometimes, I’ll admit, it reads a bit like a thriller novel, and I wondered if he was amping up the tension for effect. Still, I couldn’t put it down.
What hit me hard was how Twitter’s this huge thing now—used for everything from revolutions to memes—but it started with these flawed, messy people. I kept thinking about my own work, how we all talk big about “teamwork” but end up fighting over credit sometimes. The book’s a wake-up call about what happens when ambition gets out of control.
Rating: 4 out of 5 stars
Recommendation: If you’re into tech, startups, or just love a good story about people messing up big time, this book’s a must. It’s a quick read that’ll keep you hooked, especially if you’ve ever tweeted or wondered how those apps you use every day got made. Grab it for a lazy weekend—you won’t be bored.
