I just finished Happily Never After by Lynn Painter, and it’s a total blast—funny, flirty, and packed with heart. This 2024 rom-com follows Sophie Steinbeck, who’s about to marry a jerk who’s been cheating on her, until a guy named Max Parks steps in to object at the wedding. What starts as a rescue turns into a quirky partnership as they team up to crash other doomed nuptials, only to find themselves falling for each other despite their “no love” stance.
I was reading this on my patio one afternoon, sipping some iced tea, and the banter between Sophie and Max had me grinning like an idiot. Sophie’s this sharp, sassy woman who’s done with fairy-tale endings after her ex’s betrayal, and Max is this charming objector with his own heartbreak baggage. Their chemistry jumps off the page—think witty one-liners and stolen glances that make you root for them. The plot’s a hoot, too, with them hopping from wedding to wedding, saving people from bad matches, and I loved how Sophie’s senior-citizen roommates added some hilarious side chaos.
What I really enjoyed was how light yet real it feels. The romance builds slow and sweet, with plenty of spice kicking in later, and you can tell Painter knows how to keep things fun without getting too heavy. That said, it’s not perfect—some parts felt a bit rushed, like the shift from friends to lovers, and I wished they’d dug a little deeper into Max’s past. Still, it’s an easy read that had me laughing out loud, especially during their first drunken night together after the wedding flop.
This book left me thinking about second chances and how love can sneak up when you least expect it. I even scribbled a funny line about objecting to bad vibes on a napkin to remember it by. It’s a feel-good escape with a kick.
