Book Review: Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi
I just finished Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi, and it’s a quick, intense dive that had me hooked late tonight, 11:22 PM on Saturday, July 19, 2025. This 2012 novella, part of the Shatter Me series, flips the script to Warner’s point of view right after Shatter Me, showing the messed-up mind of the guy who’s both villain and something more. It’s short but packs a punch.
I was reading this tonight, curled up with a chai as the clock ticked past 11, and it felt like peeking into Warner’s soul. After Juliette escapes, he’s dealing with his father’s wrath, his obsession with her, and a journal that spills his raw thoughts. Mafi’s poetic style shines here—those crossed-out lines and jagged emotions made me feel his chaos. I started rooting for him, even with his creepy side, like when he’s obsessing over Juliette’s touch. The tension with his dad and the hints at his past had me flipping pages fast.
What I loved was how it humanizes Warner. You see his pain, his control issues, and that flicker of something softer, which adds layers to the series. The action’s light, but the psychological depth makes up for it. That said, it’s not perfect—being a novella, it ends abruptly, and I wanted more meat to chew on. Still, it’s a tease that keeps you craving the next book.
This got me thinking about how we judge people too quick—I scribbled “everyone’s got a story” on a napkin tonight, ‘cause it hit me. It’s a dark, gripping add-on.
