This 2011 dystopian romance kicks off with Juliette, this girl whose touch can kill, stuck in a cell in a messed-up world run by The Reestablishment. Then Adam shows up, and bam—things get crazy.
I was chilling on my couch with a chai, lights low, and her story sucked me right in. Juliette’s mind is a mess of poetic, crossed-out thoughts—Mafi’s style is nuts and totally addictive. Adam, this guard with a secret, brings hope, and their connection had me rooting hard. But Warner? That creepy, magnetic dude added a twist I couldn’t predict. The escape scene had my pulse racing—pure adrenaline!
What blew me away was the intensity. Juliette’s struggle with her power feels so raw, and the romance gives it this sweet kick. The dystopian vibe, with its control-freak rulers, sets a dark stage that works. Sure, it’s not perfect—some of her inner ramblings dragged, and Warner’s shift felt a bit quick—but it’s a hook that keeps you going.
This got me thinking about finding strength in the dark—I jotted “power’s a double-edged sword” on a napkin, ‘cause it hit me. It’s a moody, gripping start!
